We have many friends who come to visit us in Flagstaff during the summer. They like to be entertained and we thought a fun way to entertain them would be to teach them letterboxing. We think it’s a great way to explore the unusual locations away from the normal tourist spots. To start them out, we set up some letterboxing sites near us. We hope you enjoy them as well. Please note these boxes are in a forest with uneven ground. You will travel about a mile to find all six boxes in the Woodland Wonderland. You will need a compass or you can download one to your smart phone. Sorry we are not all artists so these stamps are not hand made. The log book is in box 6. The first five boxes are stamps only.

In Flagstaff, follow the signs to the Grand Canyon. When on Highway 180 you will see a sign that says seven miles to Snowbowl Road. Continue past Snowbowl Road one mile and make a left turn onto Bader Road. Continue on Bader .8 of a mile to the last street and turn right on Suzette Lane. Travel .4 of a mile and turn left onto Chambers Road. Continue straight over the cattle guard onto Rudd Tank Road .7 of a mile and past the No Outlet sign to where the pavement ends. Park in the paved turn around.

Box 1: Walk south on the unpaved forest service road until it turns a sharp left. Follow the fence line on your right past two small trees to the first tall tree close to the fence. It is about 2 feet from the fence. Walk 35 steps at 100 degrees and find the 50 foot long log on the ground. Walk toward the far left branch sticking up from the log. Look inside the log beneath the branch sticking up where the sun doesn’t shine.

Box 2: Return to the fence and turn left. Walk along the fence to the second Private Property sign attached to the fence. Face your back to the fence and walk 15 steps to the huge fallen log with the big hole at the end. Walk to that log and stand at the end of the log where the hole is and look along the right side of the long. Look under the large branch digging into the ground where the butterfly is waiting to flit its wings.

Box 3: Return to the fence and turn right and walk back to the first private property. Put your back to the property sign. Walk 70 steps at 105 degrees to an area with four stumps. At the base of the farthest stump you’ll find the frog that is waiting to hop into your log book.

Box 4: From the jumping frog, walk 48 steps at 110 degrees to a large stump about 4 feet wide. A lady bug wants to fly away from the rocks.

Box 5: Return to the fence again to the first private property sign. Turn right and walk back along the fence counting 22 fence posts. The 22nd fence post will be next to the first tree in Clue 1. Walk 24 steps at 75 degrees to a 3 foot high stump where a leaf has fallen inside the stump.

Box 6: From the leaf box stump walk 63 steps at 90 degrees to the end of a deteriorated log with an artistic root sticking up about 3 feet in the air. Under the rocks entwined in the root, a baby deer is hiding. The log book is in this box.

Return to the fence and retrace your steps to the start. Enjoy the Woodland wonderland you just explored as you return to your car..

If you are up for a nice 2 mile hike, instead of walking to your car, turn right on the forest road and go a short distance to an intersection. On the left there is a short wire fence with a walkway through it. Follow this trail about mile through the forest. After about a mile you will see a trail that cuts to your left across the meadow. Follow that trail back to Rudd Tank Road. Turn left on the road and walk to the end of the road where your car is parked. If you’re lucky, you might see some deer or elk in the meadow.

Note: The Coconino Forest Elk box is in the same area.
