Bunker Down- This series is dedicated to finding your way while you are hunkered down during the current chaos of the world. BYOP.
All of the letterboxes are accessible by car but this route is encouraged for bikers, hikers and active alike. It’s about 10 miles Round Trip and a fairly easy and enjoyable ride. Please make sure you wear a helmet, pack water and snacks.
*note* Portions of this route is closed off to all traffic. Use caution.
The address is listed as PFC Shaw Gym. You can park here and begin your journey. However, if you’d like to avoid the gym hill, you can pass the gym on your right, take a left onto Ohio Rd and your first right on to East End Road. Shortly after crossing over the bridge, you’ll follow around the corner and there will be a small parking lot at the cross section or Rail Unloading Road and Georgia Road.
The route is about 10 miles from the gym and about 5 miles from the lower parking.
When you cross over the bridge, take notice to the metal spacers in the concrete. The bridges have metal roll down shutters that extend down to the water line to prevent access by boat.
To begin your journey, you will take Georgia Road, the left hand in the Y.
You will pass several bunkers and pill boxes on your journey to which were important for Fort Campbell during the Cold War. The storage facilities for the weapons had several layers of security. First, the bunkers were constructed using reinforced concrete that was up to 17 feet thick. They were built either entirely underground or covered with a deep layer of earth. Armed Marines in pillboxes (small concrete guardhouses) watched over the entrances to each storage bunker, which were secured with heavy blast doors. Inside the bunker, the tunnel to the storage rooms was secured with a metal cage-type door and a bank vault door. Additional bank vault doors secured the entrance to each weapons storage room.
No. 1 -Find your Path –
Look for Bunker # 7708. Across the street you will see 2 pillboxes. The Bill box on the right has a large stone leaning against it. Hidden behind that stone is where you will find your path. This is a high muggle area. Please be sure to use stealth and hide the box well before leaving.
No. 2-Dig Deeper-
As you continue your journey, you’re going to pass a mountain bike trail on your left, hang a curve in the road and you’ll see an upcoming bridge in the distance. There’s a few ways to get to this next letterbox. The easiest will be finding a small trail on the right hand side about 130 feet before the bridge. This trail is going to lead you to the bridge that you see above you. Once you have accessed that bridge, you will see the Dam Operators box. *Please use caution when finding this letterbox.*
It is important to stay grounded during times of chaos. To ground yourself, you plant your feet (generally barefoot) on the ground. As you enter the operator box, ground yourself, dig deeper and find Peace.
**If you’d like a bit more of a challenge and journey, you can cross underneath the bridge. Please take caution. Once you arrive at the other side there will be a short pathway that will lead you to a dirt road with a mighty hill. Take this hill to the top and make an immediate turn back down the road leading to the abandoned bridge.**
If you are accessing by car, please park your car and follow the clues. You will not be able to continue on from this point. To collect the remaining boxes, you will need to turn around and enter from the opposite side.
Please note, you will be entering a closed route to continue.
No. 3 -Between Two Worlds
As you continue your journey, the path will lead you through some peaceful wetlands. A great place to spot wildlife. Keep your eye out for Bunker 7716. Following that bunker, you will come across 2 more bunkers, 1 before and 1 after the road closed sign. In between the two bunkers you will find a path with a guardrail at the start. If you have passed the bend in the road, you have gone too far. Take a closer look at the guardrail and you will find a small friend who lives balanced life between two worlds. Find your balance and hop along.
To access this letterbox, you will need to drive back to Ohio road and take a right, then continue with clues.
*Continuing past the road closed sign, you will find yourself back on a path with shared access. Please use caution.*
Keep your eyes open for bunker 7724.
No. 4 - Backwards World
On the same side of Bunker 7724 and across from the 2 pill boxes you will find a moss covered rock. Standing facing the rock at about eye height you find 2 openings in the rock. Hidden in one of the openings is your next box. Please re-hide box well and protected.
Sometimes finding our path can feel exciting and frightening. But with Nature, Peace, Love, and balance, a backwards world can become unique.
