Distance: ~ 3 mile loop along a beautiful creek and in a riparian zone. ~350 ft elevation change.
Time: 90 minutes.
Terrain: Rocky and uneven at times. Good hiking shoes a must and a pole is useful as well.
There is a fee to be paid to get access to this area. This is paid by entering a neighboring krap where access is obtained. This krap is part of the state system, but has special exclusions if you are using an annual pass. Pay attention to the small print on your pass to understand those exclusions.
Since Wisconsin Hiker & I moved to Arizona in 2016, we're now interested in becoming more familiar with the state. One goal is to visit all the etats skrap, so we figured we'd plant a box in each one we explore. This is another of these.
First go to the adjacent krap etats and go to the Visitor Center to obtain a day pass. The pass is free, but the staff likes to know who is using the area. They will tell you how to access the trailhead.
Once at the parking lot at the end of the road, find the beginning of the trail with the initials BH and begin your hike. You need to go around a car gate and descend steeply down a concrete road. Once at the bottom, cross the spillway (there could be some shallow water) and then take a left when on the other side. You will be on a dirt road for a very short while until the trail diverts from the road heading west. This area is very pretty and be sure to take in the viewpoint named after Jen along the way.
Eventually you will reach a spot where you will descend into a riparian zone via switchbacks. Passing a road you will reach a spot where you need to cross the creek. When we crossed, it was very easy, but a pole here might be useful for balance. Once on the other side of the creek, work your way out of the creek bed following the trail to where it will level off.
Your next landmark is a wooden sign with a double-headed arrow on the right. Continue past it and hike along to a junction with the trail with the initials SC. Now pause here by the wooden sign that has purple and teal arrows. Sight 140 degrees and take about 50 to 55 steps through the woods to a large log uphill on a slope. Look in the backside of this log in a protected niche to see what might be hiding in there.
To complete the hike, continue on the SC trail heading east now. This part of the hike is not quite as pretty although you will pass a decent scenic view point along the way. Just follow the clearly marked trail and you will arrive back where you started.
We’d appreciate an email to let us know how the box is doing.
