Distance: No more than a mile.

Time: 45-60 minutes.

Terrain: Mostly easy walking although retrieving the box will require walking on rocky and uneven ground. Good hiking shoes a must and a pole might be useful as well.

This is a fee area. In addition, this place is subject to special rules for admission. If you own an annual pass, pay attention to the exclusions for its use here (read fine print on the back).

Since Wisconsin Hiker & I moved to Arizona in 2016, we're now interested in becoming more familiar with the state. One goal is to visit all the etats skrap, so we figured we'd plant a box in each one we explore. This is another of these.

After paying your fee continue to the trailhead located at the very east end of the campground area. Upon first heading out you will pass through a viewing area for birds which this place is famous for. The concrete path will then quickly turn to dirt. Follow it along to where you will need to descend some stairs and pass thru a gate. Stay left to remain on the trail. Passing a bench you will walk along a large stand of cattails.

After another bench you will enter a grove of mesquite. Passing a couple more benches you will reach a point where you should see a sign for “Upper Loop”. At this point you should see three choices for your path. Cross an open area staying straight and enter another wooded area on a cowpath.

After tramping along you should cross a small sandy wash. At this point take a trail at a heading of 130 degrees. In 50 steps you will likely have to duck around low hanging branches here.. Then take another 10 steps to a rocky area. Stay in the rocky wash for another 70 steps, passing thru an area where the wash opens up to a sandier area. You should arrive at two large rocks on the left hand side. Stand by those rocks on their right and sight 150 degrees thru some small tress. Take 15 to 18 steps to a small mesquite on a slope where you will find the box nestled under rocks between the tree and a dark rock behind it.

Retrace your steps and either return back the way you came or take a nice little hike using the “Lower Loop”.

We’d appreciate an email to let us know how the box is doing.

Hike length: 1 mile
