This gift to the state came from the kin
of Colonel Hale Ives Goddard,
Brown U class of 1858,
a soldier at Bull Run.
Now you can enter Goddard Park
from more than one entrance,
but choose the main one off Ives Road
and all will make more sense.
Drive beyond the gate house,
bear right toward the waterfront,
pass Park HQ, go under the bridge,
and into the parking lot.
Now park your steed and find the stairs
up to the Carousel,
walk toward the bridge, while noticing
a time capsule on the hill.
Go over the bridge and to the lamp post,
stand in the center of the circle,
point your compass 320 degrees,
and walk on this diagonal
to the edge of the grove where the path parallels
the shore of Greenwich Bay,
now find and follow the path
(you may see horses along the way).
Go 120 paces or so,
look for a tree on the left
with swirling vines like a twisted line
around its bark-covered neck.
Then travel 40 paces more
to a garden of fallen trees,
like a massive driftwood art sculpture,
it's on your left, if you please.
A cubby in the fallen trunk
(a nice spot for a fox)
is where you'll find the hiding place
for Goddard's letterbox.
Note: At the time of placement, there was no evidence of poison ivy in this spot. However, when exploring in the New England woods, one must always be aware that poison ivy can grow in new places -- know the leaves of three and let them be! Also, you can help us keep our parks clean by bringing a small trash bag with you and picking up litter if you find it. Thank you!
