This tale begins in the '30s
with a group called the CCC --
The Civilian Conservation Corp --
alas, now it's history.

A product of the New Deal,
its legacy includes
fireplaces and cabins
built by an unemployed crew.

They brought their skills to Burlingame --
and may I say there are two:
one Burlingame's for camping,
the other is just for day use.

The picnic area for daytime fun
is where you'll go today -
along the shores of Watchaug Pond
just off of sanctuary way.

Once you've arrived, just saunter down
toward picnic tables and shore,
and spot the pyramid-shaped boulder
before you travel more.

Locate the pipe where water drains
and forms a winding path
to the left to the nearby woods
and just a few steps past that...

Find yourself in a grove of five
tall trees, still standing tall,
where sandy soil blends with leaves
remaining from the fall.

Then find the tree felled years ago,
it's here your treasure lies
under a blanket of lush green moss,
the earth is its disguise.

If at first you don't succeed,
hop over the log and get down low,
look underneath in a bed of leaves,
and put it back before you go!

Note: At the time of placement, there was no evidence of poison ivy in this spot. However, when exploring in the New England woods, one must always be aware that poison ivy can grow in new places -- know the leaves of three and let them be! Also, you can help us keep our parks clean by bringing a small trash bag with you and picking up litter if you find it. Thank you!
