Visit Caldwell, Kansas, On The Chisholm Trail & US 81, about 12 West of I-35.and just north of the Oklahoma State line. Caldwell is a historic "cow town" with a walking tour showing sites from when it was for a time the trailhead of the Chisholm Trail. A perfect spot for box #12 of our "Ol Chisholm Trail" series.
Clue:
Approximately 2 miles south of town on highway 81, you will find a roadside park on the east side of the highway. There are 2 different circle drives ... drive into the southernmost drive and park. There is a concrete picnic table with 3 HUGE elm trees (remnants of the "windbreaks" planted all over Kansas and Oklahoma following the dustbowl).Between the table and the road. Along the edge of the creek behind the table, there are two GRANDFATHER elms... the one on the north appears to be slowly dying. These two have a young "grandson" locust tree flourishing between them. Your treasure is hanging on the back of the trunk of the small tree at about 4 feet high.
Be sure to travel further south a short distance to view the large silhouettes on the eastern hill of "The Ghostriders of The Chisholm Trail."
