While Arizona is well known for the Grand Canyon, another prominent - and in my opinion beautiful - geologic feature across the state is the Mogollon Rim. It extends approximately 200 miles across north-central Arizona from Yavapai County almost to New Mexico. It rises over 1000 feet in some places, and it is very noticeable on many highways. The Rim defines the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau.

Along I-17, the top of the Rim is home to forests of Ponderosa pines, and as the highway descends the Rim, it goes into juniper/pinon forests, and near the bottom the forest thins out into lower desert. You may even see some yucca in bloom, too :)

This box is located at the Scenic View area on southbound I-17 immediately before it descends the Rim, about 25 miles south of Flagstaff. This view area also serves as a safety area for truckers to check their brakes before descending the steep grades of the Rim, so it is well-marked with yellow warning signs.

At the end of the view area parking lot, look parallel to the interstate in the direction of travel, and there is a large juniper by itself about 60 yards down. The letterbox is hidden under a couple of rocks and needles on the backside of the trunk.

Note: When I planted this box, there were some flowers and a couple rocks in front of the tree, presumably a roadside memorial. The letterbox is not here. It is on the opposite side of the tree from the freeway.
