Chesterfield Gorge Letterboxing Clues
Welcome to our gorgeous geological wayside! We think this waterfall and forest are pretty special! Our Girl Scout Troop 51018 has hidden 13 boxes here. See if you can find some.
Our adventure begins at the visitor center. We will start down the trail on the west side of the river, cross over a large bridge to the east side, go to the end of that trail, cross over a smaller bridge back to the west side, then walk back to the top. The clues follow the path in that order. If you can’t find one, maybe it has been moved or lost. Go on to the next.
Each box has a rubber stamp in it, which you can use to mark your own letterbox notebook. Then, mark with your own stamp or signature in ours. We’d love to know where you’re from!
Thanks, have fun, and be safe and respectful! START HERE
From the visitor center, head downhill on path. Turn LEFT to follow the GORGE TRAIL. When trail splits, stay on the RIGHT, closest to river.
1)When you see a metal railing by the river, look away from the river along the trail, for a large V tree.
2)When you can not go over a bridge and you can not go around a bridge. Where can you go?
3)Cross the large bridge to the East side. Down path, past bench, huge rock is entrenched. How did it get there?
4)One more, a bit further down. A glacial erratic is what you’ve found.
5)Balance on the beams - 1, 2, 3. Then ahead on your RIGHT is a hole in a tree.
6)Look across the gorge for evidence of a microburst (mini-tornado). Then cross the bridge back to the West side. Fun Fact: This bridge at the bottom of the Chesterfield Gorge was built by a local Eagle Scout. Look ahead to the RIGHT to find a cave in a tree.
7)Hike up giant steps till a lightning struck stump you see. Then look right for another stump.
8)Sit and enjoy on a bench or a root, then look for a log that could swallow your boot.
9)Corner of fence, with a white dot. Reach under rock to find the spot.
10) Before the large bridge, (perhaps under a bottle), look for a cave that is watching the water.
11) After the large bridge, still on the East side: A storm rolls through and takes a tree, but leaves the tree’s foundation for us to see, gritty and old though it may be.
12)A tiny bridge, or a bench for you and a dog. Look for a hole in a fallen log.
13) Almost to the top, if you are able. Find a V while you sit at the table (between path and moss-covered overhanging ledge.)
Hike length: 1 mile
