When you arrive at the nature center walk from the parking lot towards the building complex that consists of the store, welcome center, classrooms etc. If you can snag a map from outside the main building where they keep them that should make things even easier! There are 2 main ways to access the trails but to reach this letterbox, its best if you simply continue walking past the buildings until you reach the trails that start back there. The other way is a set of stairs that lead you down and over a bridge out into the fields. You want to walk past the sets of buildings whereupon you will find a large wooden arch at the start of the trails.
For those with a map, just walk to the #1. Almost all of the number indicators correspond to actual physical numbered posts along the trail. Just keep walking along this trail!
Walk along this trail that overlooks the creek below until you reach marker #7. From #7 keep walking (20ft approx.) until on your right, a very old and worn set of stone stairs shall appear. These stairs lead you down to the lower trail that runs adjacent to the creek. On your way DOWN these stairs count each one, and STOP on the lucky 13th step. Look to your right. There in the cliffside is a nice empty space just below the roots of a tree.
You will definitely have to step off of the stairs and journey over a few feet on the side of the incline, and inside that hole, just behind 2 large rocks is your letterbox! Make sure you put it back where you can't see it too easily from the trails, and our advice is to talk the "low road" out of there and back the way you came. The low trail along the river is quite pretty, if not a little harder to navigate with boulders and roots here and there. Have fun!
Note: We actually SAW a barred owl on the hike to plant this letterbox. It was really cool. One of us thought there was a dog howling in the distance, but then we realized it was the Barred Owl as soon as it swooped over our heads and landed in a tree. Happy Hunting
