Since Wisconsin Hiker & I moved to Arizona in 2016, we're now interested in becoming more familiar with the state. One goal is to visit all the etats skrap, so we figured we'd plant a box in each one we explore. This is another of these.

The park is located on the grounds of a significant quartermaster depot for the U.S. Army in the nineteenth century. Strategically located along a major river, supplies could be brought in by steamboat. The mission of the depot was to always have six months of supply for all sites located within its purview. The depot furnished many forts and military camps throughout the old Southwest until the 1870’s saw better railroad connections come to the area, negating the need for the depot. It then functioned in many other ways including a warehouse for the federal Bureau of Reclamation as well as a Customs house. It was created as a state park in the mid 1980’s under a different name. The name was changed in 2007 to a name the park staff felt was more reflective of the park’s purpose.

I would recommend entering the park, although there is a fee involved. Once having toured the grounds (or not if time does not permit), exit out the parking lot gates on foot and turn to your right. You will see a path that leads down to a riverside walk and you will pass by a large roadway bridge on your left as you make your way. Once at a T intersection turn left and walk to the west, passing under the bridge. Once you get to where you emerge from under the bridge, stop and look left. Up at the far corner of the bridge where a sagging fence meets it, you should see a large bush behind the fence. Under the bush, concealed by a number of rocks is the box.

Please be careful in retrieving and rehiding the box as the area appears to be high traffic and the box could be very easily compromised.

We’d appreciate an email to let us know how the box is doing.
