Distance/Terrain: short walk on level dirt area, less than a mile round trip.

Note: Daily fee or annual state park pass required to visit park.

Since Martini Man & I moved to Arizona in 2016, we're interested in becoming more familiar with the state. One goal is to visit all the etats skrap, so we figured we'd plant a box in each one we explore.

This park is popular for picnicking, fishing, boating and camping. The park was named when a man moved into the area in 1885 to start a farm. The locals joked that only a fool would try to farm the land, and the name stuck!

Are you a hardy or foolhardy letterboxer? Whichever applies, you must start on your quest by gaining entrance to the park and proceeding to the first intersection. It would be unwise to continue forward and foolish to turn right. Choose a route that leads you to a loop. Don’t be ridiculous and circle endlessly, instead park in a designated spot and set your silly sights (and feet) in the direction the WISE men came from. A lunatic might ramble aimlessly but you should instead blaze a trail to the lakeshore.

If you aren’t witless, you should have no trouble finding the large body of water and then tromping north until you reach a fence and a brown sign title “FHL by AZG&FD”. From this landmark, take a bearing of 195° and walk 45 sensible steps in this direction. You may arrive at a wooden relic. Continue on a bearing of 210° degrees for another 45 cautious steps to reach a small grove of trees. The prize for your fool’s errand lies beneath a flat rock hidden by a low hanging branch.

Use your intelligence to find your way back!
