Wyatt DSA and Kayla DSA are Dog Scouts who LOVE to hike while letterboxing and geocaching around ponds and brooks, and they are very excited about their Beach Buddies Series! Start this adventure by locating the on site parking area on Whalehead Road - look for the Avalonia Land Conservancy Brown and Yellow sign that says Pine Swamp Wildlife Corridor - Slosberg Anderson Woodlands. Start on the wide trail behind the sign. When you come to the two boulders with blue blazes on them (only about .07 miles from the sign!) on your left, you will find your first prize in a cave on the back side of the boulder next to the tree. I found a sea shell already says Kayla DSA !!!!! ("Kayla's Sea Shell")
Continue on the trail and bear left, keeping the pond on your right. You will eventually pass by the yellow blaze trail on your left - do not take that, stay on blue. Eventually you will come to a gravel path (green gate on the left), you will continue to bear right staying on the blue blaze trail. "I need to find a sea shell" says Wyatt. Eventually, you will come to fairly wide clearing on your left (while still on the gravel path) with access to the pond. This area is right beside a telephone pole with a blue blaze. I will swim says Kayla while you look for your shell, Wyatt. Wyatt searched behind the telephone pole a few steps and found a sea shell buried beneath two flat stones and some bark. I found a shell says Wyatt! ("Wyatt's Sea Shell")
Let's wish upon a star that we will be friends forever says Wyatt and Kayla. Off they went until they came to the sign that says "Loop" on the right. Take this right onto the loop trail (still on blue). When you reach the wooden stairs, before climbing the stairs, look to your left and see the big boulders to the left of a clump of birch trees (about 6 trees). These boulders are also parallel to a tree on the path with a blue dot. You will the find the SEA STAR that Wyatt and Kayla wished upon in a cave under the center boulder. "Here we are, wishing on our star" says Wyatt and Kayla.
The two forever friends continued on until they came to a very large boulder with a big blue dot - almost like a break in a wall. They looked to the left yet again - and saw a very large boulder not far from the path. They investigated. There were two boulders side by side with almost like a crack in between them and they placed their final box in a cave under the boulder's back side (back side from the trail). A very unique and special sea creature is hidden inside the box with the log book, with GOLD ink.
They continued on the scenic blue dot loop trail, crossing streams, and enjoying the adventure together. Dog Scouts of America encourages adventures, responsible pet ownership, trail safety and responsibility, conservation efforts and many other things. Wyatt DSA has earned the Beach Buddies merit badge. For more information on dog scouts, please visit dogscouts.org.
