Lake Champlain is rumored to have a monster of its own, much like the one in Loch Ness. And like Nessie, physical evidence is between scarce and non-existent. However, should you be in the right place at the right time, you could perchance spy this elusive creature and be the first to photograph it definitively. Fame and fortune await! But first you will need to get to a "right place". We think Niquette Bay State Park in Colchester, Vermont, provides such a spot, so your quest will take you there. Before heading out, you can check the trail map here: https://vtstateparks.com/assets/pdf/niquette.pdf
Drive into the park and pay the entrance fee ($4/age 14+, $2/age 4-13, under 4 free, as of posting the clue). The friendly attendants will provide you with a hard-copy of the trail map, so park your car and get your bearings.
From the parking lot, head for the Burns Trail and follow it until it connects to the Muhley Trail.
Take the Muhley Trail north past the Mansfield Vista to the Island View Trail.
Go to the right onto the Island View Trail and when you come to the Y, go right.
Walk until you see a 5-trunk tree on the right and then further down a large rock outcropping, also on the right and perpendicular to the trail.
Halfway between the tree and the outcropping, turn to the right then walk off the trail about 48 feet (8 paces for Big Rabbit) parallel to the outcropping until you are between the large outcropping and a smaller one on your right.
Turn to the left and see a slender tree guarding a fissure in the large outcropping.
At the base of the tree is a pile of rocks wherein lies Champ. Please carefully hide the box back where you found it. Round trip is roughly 2.5 miles, and budget about an hour and a half.

You can continue on the trail to the Island View Vista and possibly glimpse Champ in person. If the weather is good, you should certainly see the Island Line Trail that links Colchester with South Hero on Grand Isle. The rest of the park is a gem and well worth an afternoon visit. Pet friendly, kid friendly, well-maintained trails, and you can go swimming (there's a separate area for dogs in Calm Cove). Plus, your state park pass is good at any other Vermont state park until sunset, so no need to pay again if you have other boxes to find in other parks that day.

Hike length: 2-3 miles
