This series is planted on the section of the Long Trail that brings you to Sunset Rock. Things you need to know about the hike:
- the hike is about one mile each way
- you will be climbing about 500ft of elevation, but most of the steeper part of the climb is in the first half of the hike
- the trail changes from earth to sloping rock face about half way in: please be careful, as these areas can become slippery with any rain
- the Lincoln Gap Road is closed from late October until mid May, so make sure to check online before heading out to find this series if you are unsure if the road is open or not
To find the Lincoln Gap Long Trail trailhead from Warren, head 4.1 miles up Lincoln Gap Road from its intersection with Route 100 and pull over in the parking area on your left. To find the trailhead from Lincoln, head 3.6 miles up Lincoln Gap Road from its intersection with S. Lincoln Road and pull over in the parking area on your right. You will be heading south on the Long Trail, which begins on the same side of the road as you are parking.
The Last Day of Love: As you begin your hike, even before you have a chance to sign in, look for a tree with a sign on your right. A few steps beyond, on the right of the trail, you will see a dead tree. Look near the base on the back side to find this box hidden between the tree and a log.
When it Goes Too Soon: Continue up the trail, sign in, and then head on. You'll need to climb the steepest inclines of this trail before you can find box #2. Make your way up, up, and up. When the terrain begins to flatten, you'll find yourself climbing around a white birch tree sitting in the middle of the trail. You'll have climbed around a few of these already, but you were still heading up the incline, so hadn't quite made it yet. A few steps beyond the birch, find the dead tree on your right that has fallen toward the trail with its roots exposed and its top half missing. Search along the side of this tree facing up the trail. The box is hidden behind a small log that is acting as the little spoon to this tree's big spoon.
You Took the Sun With You: Before finding box #3, you'll need to make it all the way to sunset rock. The trail will continue its way up, but nothing nearly as steep as what you just finished hiking. When you come to a large stone rising up on your right, with a white blazed pine 1/2 way up, you may choose to take the path around to the left, rather than climbing over the rock. A little while later, don't be fooled by a small off-shoot on your left that heads to a rock - this is not your destination! You will come to another large stone rising up on your right with what looks like an avalanche of smaller stones in front of it. Again you may choose to take the trail to the left of it, rather than climbing over. If you choose to walk around, turn left when you meet back up with the trail that crossed the rock. There will be no mistaking when you reach sunset rock: you will emerge fully from the woods and find yourself atop a large stone ledge with amazing views. Enjoy the view and rest before heading back the way you came. When you are ready to return to your car, look for a small rock ledge running along the right side of the trail as you leave sunset rock. Find the first tree whose roots come down the side and hug the ledge. Box #3 is hidden between the tree and the ledge, under sticks and a small stone.
