If you have never seen Look About Lodge, you are in for a real treat! Build 80 years ago of 300 American chestnut logs, its original purpose was as a meeting place for the Cleveland Natural Science Club, which it still is today. Now a part of the South Chagrin Reservation of Cleveland Metroparks, it is a site of many wonderful programs: children's activities, adult hikes, summer and winter concert series...to name a few.
Head up the drive off Miles Road and park anywhere in the lot. Walk towards the building entrance, taking note of the lovely Native Spring Wildflower Garden on your left as you pass along the left side of the building.
Looking straight ahead towards the forest, you will see a trail post with a red hiker logo. You may begin to notice the sound of falling water as you take that trail, turning to the right. Follow the red trail down the side of the ravine; you are entering what I consider to be the most enchanting spot in this park.
Take the stone steps heading LEFT towards the little creek.
Looking ahead you will see 2 medium-sized sycamore trees in a line. As you pass the first one, see a smaller tree on the left, about midway between the sycamores. Behind this approx. 5" diameter tree you will find the letterbox beneath a rock outcropping, hidden among some sticks and dry leaves.
After ascending back up the stone steps, you may return to your car the same way you came OR if you are adventurous, walk up more stone steps to the next level, go uphill via the unmarked trail on the right, then turn left at the green N.C. sign, then right onto a wider trail, ahead. Past the stone multi-fireplace you will see the parking lot.
