Begin: Parking area for the Ashton Mills entrance to the bike path, 51 Front Street, Cumberland, RI (be sure your navigator isn't taking you to Front Street in Lincoln).

PLEASE NOTE: The Map link to the right does not show this parking area! Do not use the pins in red shown. In Google Maps this is called the ASHTON MILLS PARKING AREA. The apartments are called The River Lofts at Ashton Mills.

Start your walking app. From the parking area walk to the bike path and turn left.

Go over the bridge and again turn left. There will be a white historic house* on your right.

Follow the paved path as it curves around a big grassy area. At the 3/10 mark turn left onto a wide mowed path.

Follow this path for 3/10 of a mile (do not turn off to the right where there is a side path). This path will pass through the field and enter the woods until you reach a steep uphill to get back on the paved path.

Turn left and walk 1/10 of a mile. You will see Canoe Rock on the right, with a 10.5 mile marker and an upright stone, an old hitching post next to the tow path. Walk between these two stones up onto the rock toward a thin upright tree.

There will be a rounded portion of rock to the right. Step up onto this and face the canal, look down and you will see a crevice with a flat slate rock snug against it.

Remove the flat rock and leaves and you will find Caelus' Sniffing Spot letterbox. This letterbox was placed in memory of a brindle-spotted hound mix who loved to sniff everywhere along the bike path. His name means God of the Sky. If you have a dog with you, please let him/her sniff along the paths as Caelus loved to do.

Total round-trip distance: 1.6 miles.

If you want a longer hike, you can start at the bike path parking lot on Front Street in Lincoln. This will be about 4 miles round trip. You will pass under the Martin Street bridge and Canoe Rock will be on your left. The letterbox is at the north end of the rock.

*Captain Wilbur Kelly House Museum (April-October) features exhibits on canal, railroad and highways. Depicts intersections of fields and factories. https://www.visitrhodeisland.com/listing/blackstone-river-state-park/110/

Hike length: 1-2 miles
