My favorite comic series is “Dilbert” because when it first began I was an engineer working in an office environment, similar to Dilbert. Many of the comic strips satirizing technology, workplace, and company issues seemed like they could have been written about our own office. I found them hilarious and often cut out various strips and hung them in my work area. I haven’t seen the strip for a long time and assumed it was defunct. When creating this letterbox series I was surprised to discover it is still an active comic strip. I noticed that the characters now wear “business casual” attire but are still suffering similar office issues. Although I am no longer working, I got a chuckle from some of the current strips.

There is only one logbook, in the last box of the series.

DILBERT - a frustrated engineer who tries to find logic and righteousness in an evil and crazy business world.

To find the main man of the strip, follow the AZ Trail signs downhill from the parking lot and when you reach the cabin/”B&B”, turn right onto an unofficial trail. You’ll immediately see an old adobe house on your right and then pass through a gate (be sure to reattach the chain keeping the gate closed). After coming through the gate, take a bearing of 285° to see a sprawling giant on a mound. Dilbert is hiding behind the fork of the limb that overhangs the ditch/wash. Please be sure to bury him back under his workload.

WALLY – a lazy coffee-addicted engineer who is highly skilled at doing no work and still avoiding punishment from the boss.

Return to the main path and continue onward. The path will occasionally cross a wash, but always look for, and continue on, the trail on the other side of the wash. Eventually you should see 4 small boulders across the path at the side of the wash. Take the trail up beyond the boulders and keep going until you reach 2 multi-trunks on your left (1 larger, 1 smaller) just as the trail makes a sharp right to ascend a hill. Stop here to find Wally hiding behind the right side of the small multi-trunk. He is hunkered down under a small rock pile, beneath an overhanging branch and some grass. Rehide the slacker well so the boss can’t find him.

[You may want to look for Steve Canyon at this point]

ALICE - one of the more competent engineers, but often frustrated that her work does not get proper recognition due to her gender. She is prone to controlled fits of rage, having a very short and often violent temper.

Turn around to retrace your steps to return to camp. On your way back you’ll pass through a small shady glen with yuccas and the ditch/wash nearby on your left. After leaving this sanctuary you’ll see a large fallen juniper on your right. Alice is working hard under the front side of the trunk, near the base. Give her some praise and tuck her back in her cubicle before she unleashes her “fist of death”.

POINTY HAIRED BOSS - the hopelessly inept boss that is everything a boss should not be: ineffectual, incompetent, unethical, unfair, and a terrible listener.

Continue on the path returning to camp and eventually cross the wash near a 10’-15’ snag on the north side of the wash. A bit further on the path is another shady glen with a single yucca on the right. From the yucca walk 10 more steps. You should be in a slight dip in the trail and be able to see a small agave on the hillside in the distance on the right side of the trail. The boss is practicing buzzwords inside a log behind the agave. After checking in with the boss and closing the door of his office, continue retracing your steps back to your vehicle.

Please send an email to let me know how the Dilbert gang is doing. Thanks!
