Monte Sano State Park is located, near Huntsville, in northeast Alabama. In Spanish, Monte Sano means “Mountain of Health.” In the late 1800s, visitors from across the United States came for “the season” to experience and enjoy Monte Sano’s fresh air, spectacular views and mineral springs.
Today in the park they have many activities that bring people to the park. Hiking and Biking trails, Camping and Cabins, History and fun new activities abound. On your visit to the park you will need to pay an entrance fee and you may want to stop by the camp store and pick up a map before you head to the trail head parking lot.
From the Trail head parking lot head South along the South Plateau Trail to the split and go to the right. Cross over the intersection of the Fire Tower Trail and keep going past the third bridge. Now go on past the next shelter on the left side of the trail. After passing the 1 mile marker you will go on down the SPT to the next intersection of the Fire Trail, keep going down the SPT past the next shelter. On down the trail past the 1.5 mile marker. Next you will come to another trail intersection that leads down to another shelter on the right. Before going to the shelter look at the side trail coming into the main trail. Just at the start/end of the side trail you will see a V-tree on the left at its base. (Red Egg)(HT21)
Now back across the trail and down to the shelter for another box to hunt. North West corner in the rafters you will find it. (Green Egg)(TH20)
Climb back up to the SPT and keep going. You are looking for a side trail on the right with some Yellow Blazes on the right. Go a very short way down this trail to some small Cactus plants. Now turn around to go back and look for a three sister tree next to this trail, at the base is a rock door to the box. (Blue Egg)(HT19)
Up for more Holidays or back to the car.
Hike length: 2-3 miles
