Monte Sano State Park is located, near Huntsville, in northeast Alabama. In Spanish, Monte Sano means “Mountain of Health.” In the late 1800s, visitors from across the United States came for “the season” to experience and enjoy Monte Sano’s fresh air, spectacular views and mineral springs.
Today in the park they have many activities that bring people to the park. Hiking and Biking trails, Camping and Cabins, History and fun new activities abound. On your visit to the park you will need to pay an entrance fee and you may want to stop by the camp store and pick up a map before you head to the trail head parking lot.
From the Trail head parking lot head South along the South Plateau Trail to the split and go to the right. Cross over the intersection of the Fire Tower Trail and keep going past the third bridge. Now go on past the next shelter on the left side of the trail. After passing the 1 mile marker you will go on down the SPT to the next intersection of the Fire Trail, keep going down the SPT past the next shelter. On down the trail past the 1.5 mile marker. Next you will come to another trail intersection that leads down to another shelter on the right. Keep going down the South Plateau until you reach the intersection of the Bucca Family trail, now go back 35 paces, from the sign post, and look to your left for a three sister tree, look at the base. (HT18)
You are almost up to O'Shaughnessy Point where the SPT makes the turn back to the parking lot and you can chose to go either way back from here.
Hike length: 2-3 miles
