The book, Carnegie Mystery by Wilma Kim Pediatus, can only begin to unravel the story of one of the world’s greatest philanthropists, Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie was born in Scotland in 1835. He attended the Free School of Dunfermline, which had been a gift to his city by another Scottish philanthropist, Adam Roland. Apparently Carnegie did not forget his early introduction to books and learning. After steel and railroads made Carnegie one of the richest men in America he devoted the last part of his life to local libraries, scientific research, education and world peace.

You will find what you seek in one of Carnegie’s libraries, the Big Horn County Library at 419 N. Custer Avenue in Hardin, MT. The cornerstone for this library was laid in 1918 after the Carnegie Corporation gave the community a $15,000 gift. The cornerstone contains a sealed metal box. In it are one penny, one dime, one quarter, one thrift stamp, a brief history of the library, Big Horn County and Hardin, and a then current issue of the Hardin Tribune. The original building was expanded in 1987, creating additional space for the children’s section, for teens, for a board room, an elevator and more collections, and for computers and offices. It is one of 9 Carnegie libraries in Montana still in use today.

In 2018 the Big Horn County Library celebrates its Centennial Anniversary.

Enter through the main doors of the library from the parking lot. After stopping to admire the exquisite dollhouse in the foyer, open the elevator doors and travel up to level 2. It is also possible to reach this level by using the stairs in front of you. In the stacks, look for the book by the author’s name. Please be discrete when leaving your stamp and taking an imprint of the one in the book. If you find anything amiss, please take the book to the check out desk and give it to one of the librarians.

Happy letterboxing!
