This box is located within the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area (http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/blm_special_areas/ncarea/lascienegas.html), approximately 45 miles SE of Tucson. Pack a picnic and take time to explore this area while looking for the box. Water and restrooms are available at the Empire Ranch Headquarters.
Driving Directions
From I-10, Exit 281 drive south on AZ 83 the entrance, on the east side of the road, to Las Cienegas National Conservation Area, between mileposts 40 and 39. The roads within this area are dirt, graded and 2 WD. Drive just under 3 miles on Road 6900 to the stop sign, a short distance past the turn-off to the Empire Ranch Headquarters. Turn right at the stop sign, following the brown sign towards Highway 82 which is 8 miles away. Drive for 5.2 miles to a pull out on the left which has two signs: one for Prairie Dogs and one for Raptors.
To the box:
From the right edge of the right sign (raptors), locate a hip high narrow-leaf yucca plant about 50 steps away. Walk the 50 steps to the yucca. Thirty steps (slightly downslope) at 165* is the multi-trunk mesquite tree you are seeking. The box is under one rock on the further side of the tree. Please don’t add any rocks but rehide the box well after you’ve stamped in.
Notice: Other boxes (mine and other planters) are in the area. Please make sure to check for them before you leave the area…
Please double bag and make sure to leave the box as you found it. Also, this is Arizona. Nothing in the wild out here is cuddly. Things will bite, stink, sting and poke you. Be aware and poke around with your hiking stick before reaching for the box!
