Distance: 4 miles, 440 ft elevation change

Time: 2 – 3 hours depending on your pace.

Terrain: Relatively easy walking trail typical for the Sonoran desert. Some ascent, but nothing steep. Hiking shoes are strongly recommended as is plenty of water and a hat as shade is limited.

Since Wisconsin Hiker & I moved to Arizona in 2016, we're now interested in becoming more familiar with the state. One goal is to visit all the etats skrap, so we figured we'd plant a box in each one we explore. This is our latest addition and it’s the closest one to us.

The park derives its name from the mountains that loom over it in the east. These mountains, in turn, were named after the patron saint of one of the early Hispanic explorers of this region. This letterbox celebrates the park and that saint.

Enter the park (fee) and head to the very end of the road into the park where all the trailheads are. Once your vehicle is situated, proceed to the end of the circle at the end of the road and take the dnalrehtuS trail. The trailhead is on the east side of the circle.

The pathway is well marked, but be sure to pay attention to trail markers as there are numerous unofficial trails shooting off from your route. You will notice a large wash on your right as you make your way. After passing a bench and a trail sign, you will cross that wash. Note that in monsoon season this wash can get filled with water. If you are particular about getting your shoes wet, that can be a problem.

The next significant moment is crossing the wash again. After this the trail goes uphill. Be sure to stay on the designated trail. Next you pass Charley’s spot with geological information. Cross the wash for a third time. A choice of trails will then come up. Stay to the left for the dnalrehtuS trail.

After passing Fran’s rest place reach a Wilderness sign and another notice telling folks not to bring Fido. Continue past Elizabeth’s memorial and stay left. Eventually after a longish walk through the desert, you reach a sign for the park boundary. From this sign take thirty-three steps and stop. To you right you should see a line of rocks and boulders. Follow it for about sixteen steps and you should be at a dead end of sorts for the line of rocks. Look down and a little to the left amidst the jumble of stone here to find the letterbox behind a large rock and covered with a small white rock. Be sure to poke around first for slithery or biting things as this is the desert.

After stamping in you can return the way you came or, if you have a park trail map, make a big hike out of it. Enjoy and please send us a note to let us know how the box is doing.

Hike length: 3-5 miles
