“White Squirrel”
White squirrels are a locally famous and rare species of squirrel. There are a few myths about how they came to be, maybe you’ll discover your own origin story today as you search for the White Squirrel.
Today’s adventure brings you to the Horse Shoe Boating Access located at:
5437 Brevard Road
Horse Shoe, NC 28742.
You will want to have closed toe shoes and a pair of gloves with you for this hunt. Please watch out for poison ivy and snakes.
Once you have parked in the Boating Access parking lot, find the information kiosk. You may wish to read a little bit about or organization before going around behind the kiosk. Stand so your shoulders are parallel to the panel with information about Conserving Carolina (formerly known as Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy).
HINT: The information may not yet be updated with the new organization name.
From your spot up against the kiosk, take 13 steps forward in a straight line. The ground should slope down steeply in front of you to a stream that feeds into the French Broad River. From the point where you stopped, you should see a log fallen on the ground. Depending on the time of the year it may have fungi on it. Hiding under the end closest to you, you will find our white squirrel. You may need to move some grass-like material away from the log to find him. Please hide as well as you found, and let us know if you suspect our squirrel has washed away.
