This letterbox is part of the GO and Build a Better World! program in Adams County. It will be available from June 3, 2017 to July 29, 2017. Further details about the program may be found at www.goadams.org.

The GO and Build a Better World! program requires you to search for up to 15 “landmarks” – wooden posts with engraved plates on them, instead of a traditional letterbox and stamp. Please use a colored pencil or crayon to carefully rub the impression onto your GO and Build a Better World! rubbing sheet, available for free at any Adams County Library.

GO Adams! level of difficulty = Moderate

- Find the brick/stone structure with the bronze historical marker that reads "CALEDONIA FURNACE". Read the plaque carefully. Who erected (built) the Caledonia Furnace in 1837?
- Take about 10 steps backward and look for a brown post/sign with a number 3 on top. You will be walking on the historical trail named after the man who built the Caledonia Furnace. Follow the yellow arrow on the sign to find that start of the trail.
- At the top of the first hill, cross the walking bridge. Continue to follow this historical trail alongside the stream. You should continue to see trail markers.
- You will cross another walking bridge and will proceed up a hill once again. Be careful to walk and not run since this path will have rocks and tree roots along the way. As you climb this hill you will notice trail markers (yellow rectangles) on the trees.
- You will come to a sign that reads CHARCOAL HEARTH TRAIL. Remember: You are going to stay on the trail named after the man who built the Caledonia Furnace. This trail goes downhill to the left NOT uphill.
- Follow the trail down the steps and stop at the bottom of the steps. DO NOT CROSS THE ROAD WITHOUT AN ADULT. Carefully cross the road and proceed towards the yellow gate. You should again see a trail sign which directs you around the lake.
- Continue to follow the trail through the wooded area and along the stream. You will come to a sign that tells you that the trail has ended. Look to your left for the post.
- To return to the parking lot: Follow the same trail back to the parking lot. Do not attempt to walk on the road and be sure to promptly return to the trail when crossing the road during your walk/hike.

Hike length: 1-2 miles
