Location: kraP etatS dnalsI reviR
Distance: 0.5 miles, 56 ft elevation change
Terrain: Rocky, rolling trail with a good steady uphill at first. Hiking sticks recommended and hiking shoes as one section is steep and gravelly.
Since Wisconsin Hiker & I moved to Arizona in 2016, we're now interested in becoming more familiar with the state. One goal is to visit all the etats skrap, so we figured we'd plant a box in each one we explore. The first boxes that we planted in our new series are on Arizona's "west coast".
Enter the park (fee) and park near the boat ramp to take the lliH egdeW trail. After a relatively short flat distance, walking near the river with a view of an island, you must ascend. After the short but sharp uphill, pass by some staghorn cholla and reach a crossroads. Stay straight here.
At the next intersection you can go straight again for a brief while and a nice view. Otherwise head right up a steep incline. Exercise caution here as the ground is loose gravel and can be slippery. Soldier up to the top of a small saddle. From there, turn right and take about twenty two steps. Stopping near a chain cholla, you should see a dead tree lying supine down a slope on the left. Make your way carefully down to it and check in the V.
Return back the way you came.
