Find the Brownies
Once upon a time, there were two little girls who lived near Lake Lynn in Raleigh with their granny and their father. The girls played all day while the granny and father had to work very hard. One day granny told the girls about the Brownies, who used to do lots of things to help around the house. “They are gone now,” she said, “but we were always so much happier when they helped”. The girls wanted to know where the Brownies had gone and how to get them to come back. Granny said, "only the wise old owl knows!"
The next day, the two girls went to the playground at Lake Lynn Community center. After playing for a while, they noticed a paved trail between the playground and the parking lot and decided to explore. They walked along the paved path until near the 2 ¼ mile marker they heard a loud hooting to their left. There perched on an ENORMOUS stump they spotted the wise old owl.
"Please", said the girls, "where can we find the Brownies to come and live with us?” The owl said, "I know where two live – right in your house!" They were very surprised! “Tell us how to find them”, they begged.
He told them- “Continue on the path until you reach a wooden bridge with a fork in it. At the fork in the bridge, stay straight until your feet meet the paved path again. A little way after the 1 ¼ mile marker you will find a clearing with two benches where you can stand beside Lake Lynn in the magic forest. Walk up to the water and when you are there, you must turn around three times and say, ‘twist me and turn me and show me the elf… I looked in the water and saw…….!’”
The wise old owl said, "When you finish the rhyme, you will see the Brownie in the magic lake. Once you see the Brownie, continue along the path over the next wooden bridge until you get to Governor’s Point. Once you are there, you will see a short red post that says "1/4 Lake Lynn". Directly across the path you will find me halfway up a fallen log covered in white fungus. I'll be perched right between two large grey rocks by the log.”
Hike length: 1-2 miles
