For those of us who grew up loving Pokemon, and to welcome all the newcomers who found it with Pokemon Go! This series will use the Pokemon Go ap as the locator for these boxes. If you don't have the game, it's free in the Ap Store for your iOS, Android, or other device. If you don't have, or don't want the game, you can still find the boxes, but it will be difficult!
Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville is a beautiful park with stunning memorials. Pokemon Go uses works of art, murals, statues, and memorials as markers for Pokestops (where you can pick up supplies) and Pokegyms (where you can train or battle). You have to visit these real-life locations to advance in the game, and you have to walk (or bike, or slowly drive) to catch the Pokemon that will pop up everywhere, and to hatch eggs.
Box 1: Shadyside Snorlax
The Jones Monument (fairly close to the entrance at Penn and Pearl Street) is a tall, square structure with two women carved in a seated position on the front; one holding a book, one holding a wreath and palm frond. Stairs lead up to the monument, which you can easily ascend to stand at their feet. If you were to look directly behind them, the Shadyside Snorlax found a spot to sleep behind their robes. Be stealthy, lots of muggles are about playing the game and battling for this gym! Although Team Instinct has held it for a while now ;)
Box 2: Keep Pittsburgh Odd-ish
Facing the Jones monument, you should be able to see another gym close by, to your right. In the game, it's named "We Need a Bigger Boat," in homage to the famous Jaws tombstone. If you don't have the game, you can google directions to this gravestone, which is a local oddity :) Take a short walk, mostly downhill towards this gym, and you will see the lovely gothic Moorhead Mausoleum (built in 1862) on your left. If you dare to peek in the windows, you'll see stairs leading down into a crypt. On the opposite side of the Mausoleum from the gym (and the Jaws tombstone) there is a short set of stairs built into the hill and facing the doors into the Mausoleum. Behind the top stair, some of the soil has eroded, leaving space underneath the stairs. There is where you will find the Oddish.
Box 3: Allegheny Eevee
The main 2 entrances to the cemetery are on Butler street between Plummer St. and Umpire Way. A castle-like entrance with stone towers lines the opening. The pokemon gym, creatively named Allegheny Cemetery Entrance, is on the northern entrance. When you enter the cemetery, you'll see a gothic building on your right (the admin office) and a field of beautiful old trees on your left. Turning to your left, about 5 fence-posts North, you will see a large tree close to the fence. There's a hollow at the base of the tree, on the North side, wherein Allegheny Eevee sleeps. Lots of street-traffic here, so be stealthy, and please leave the box well-covered with leaves and sticks, as the hollow isn't deep, so passers-by may spot the box if it isn't covered.
I'm not native to the city, so any help with upkeep would be much appreciated in case I'm not back for a few years. All updates and comments welcome. Enjoy!
