An Apple A Day

This box is located off a public school trail system. Please be courteous and only go for this box on the weekend or after 5pm during the week. This includes the summer as they have summer school programs. This box was placed with the help of Rainbow Kids Childcare.

Ever wondered why the Keweenaw has so many apple trees practically everywhere?

One possible explanation goes as follows;

Many miner families had children and they were sickly due to lack of fruit. Miner moral was down and so too production due to the sickness of the children. Due to this the mine companies shipped in apple trees instead of just the apples. One tree for each child.

This is why you will find the trees everywhere, even in the wooded areas as there were many more people here in the busy mining era of the Copper Country then there are now.

To find this box, first head to Hancock Elementary School. Head to the end of the parking lot and start your walk at the corner of the playground fence. Follow the newly mulched trail till you come to a three way fork. Take the left fork and continue along the path and past the back of the playground. Continue on the path into the pines. When you come another fork go right. Continue along the path and through the pines. Go under the pine fall. continue till you come out of the pines and find the maple tree with a topless pine beside it and a dead pine behind. It will be to your left off the trail.

Walk off the trail at these trees and find the rain gage. Standing so that your back is to the trail and you are in front of the rain gage. Looking strait ahead, find the multi-trunked crab apple tree and walk to that. Approximately 10 steps. Turn to your right and find the apple tree. The box is there. After hiding the box again, face the apple tree with the crab apple to your left. Turn right and look for the hidden path through the hawthorns. Walk this path till you come to a clearing. On the right side of this clearing you will find the main path once again. Taking this path keep to the left until you make it back to the parking lot.
