"Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul!"
This year, 2012, marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's THE HOBBIT. This is the book that tells the story which is the center of his more monumental work, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Later this year, the movie will be released in two parts. To celebrate the anniversary, here is a nine-box series of two-sided hand-carved, NOT FOR SHARE, stamps which illustrate the nine riddles in Chapter 5, which I believe is the center of the center of the Trilogy.
the fourth riddle:
An eye in a blue face
Saw an eye in a green face.
"That eye is like to this eye
Said the first eye,
"But in low place,
Not in high place."
DIRECTIONS: You can get to this box by taking RT15 to Exit 46(Sport Hill Road), drive North until you reach the Easton Village Store, and park. I think that it is much more fun to take RT 59 West toward Easton from RT25 in Monroe.
Either way, you will travel through deer territory for a mile or so. Have a care that a white stag doesn't cross your path. Don't make the same mistake that Bilbo and the Dwarves did: STAY ON THE ROAD! The woodelves are chasing that deer. And they are not friendly.
If you are travelling from Monroe, you will pass through creepy woods until you reach the intersection with RT136. STAY ON THE ROAD! Turn left and continue to follow RT59 (Stepney Rd.). You will pass several streets with woodsey names, several farms, including Silverman's Animal Farm. You can get wonderful local fruits and vegetables and honey here. Remember Beorn and his talking animals, meadows of flowers and large bumblebees. Immediately after you pass Silverman's Farm you will come to the intersection with Center Road. On the left is the sunny yellow Easton Village Store. Next to it on the left is a sunnier yellow and cheery house. Park between the store and the house.
CLUES: Carefully walk across Sport Hill Road, heading on Center Road in the direction of the Fire House. Alongside of the firehouse is a grassy lawn/lot on your left. Walk into the lot and head for the far right corner. You will see a large four-sister tree with a stone wall behind it. Through the fence, you will see a larger meadow. Behind the tree, at its base, you will see a flat, half-circle stone. The fourth RIDDLES BOX is underneath the stone. There is a special metallic ink for stamping both sides of the stamp, and a cloth to wipe your fingers. PLEASE SNAP THE INK CONTAINER SHUT COMPLETELY. There is no logbook. Please hide the box well, after you have stamped in.
