Martha’s Vineyard, an island five miles off the coast of Cape Cod Massachusetts, was discovered in 1602 by Bartholomew Gosnold and named after his daughter and for the many vines found there. Noted for its fine beaches and resort atmosphere, the island has a year round population of around 18,000 which swells to over 50,000 during the summer months.
The Vineyard is readily accessible by ferry or by air. There are ferries to Vineyard Haven or Oak Bluffs from Quonset Pt, RI, New Bedford, and Woods Hole. Planes are available from Boston, New Bedford and Hyannis. Bicycles can be taken on some ferries or rented on the island. Car reservations must be made in advance – like January of February for summer months. We like to go there by sailboat.
The island has an extensive series of bicycle paths – some along highways and roads, some as a separate path. Traffic can be problematic in the summer., as there are lots of cars going fast, and many do not know where they are going. The western side of the island from West Tisbury to Aquinnah (Gay Head) does not, at this writing, have bike paths. You will share the road with automobiles. As the bluffs at Aquinnah give spectacular views of Rhode Island Sound over to Newport and of Buzzards Bay and the Elizabeth Islands, it is well worth the trip out. There is excellent bus service available on the island. At this writing one can purchase an all day pass allowing one access to the entire island for $6.00.
The Vineyard Holiday Letterbox was placed this summer while we were enjoying an extended weekend on our sailboat in the harbor. It is located just off Highland Drive along the east side of Vineyard Haven Harbor. From Oak Bluffs, head west on New York Avenue past the harbor and turn right onto East Chop Drive. (East Chop Dr is a loop road that becomes Highland Drive just past East Chop lighthouse.) Along this road are scenic views to the north looking across Vineyard Sound to Cape Cod. After visiting the East Chop lighthouse, continue west onto Highland Drive. Look for utility pole number 57-16. With pole to your back, the prize you seek is located 5 steps to the left under rocks and behind a juniper. Please be circumspect, as this is a rapidly building residential area. If you encounter any problems, feel free to contact as at"mulbie@yahoo.com" Enjoy!
