You probably don't want to try this one in the winter!
Many years ago I first went here with my Girl Scout Troop while camping at Mohawk Trail SP. I fell in love with it! Until returning to the area, to once again camp, 5 years ago, I had not been back for almost 25 years. Friends of mine had always been unable to find the falls again. Three years ago my husband and I managed to find it after quite a search! I hope you enjoy the area as much as I do.
Directions: Heading West on Route 2 you want to go through Charlemont and past Mohawk Trail SP and into Savoy. The road you are looking for is 2.6 miles from the entrance to Mohawk Trail SP, just before the "Entering Florida" sign. The road is on the left. Go UP this road, at 1.4 miles it takes a corner to the right, keep going. At 2.5 miles take a right onto Tannery Road. This is a dirt road and you should go slow as it can be in rough shape sometimes. Go 7/10 of a mile and turn right into the Tannery Falls Parking area. As you enter the parking area the trail is on your right.
Clues: Park and enter the trail. You want to follow the blue markers, sometimes you need to really look for them. Just remember to keep the river on your left. At one point you will come to where the river takes a sharp turn to the right and you can go out on a point overlooking the top of the falls. There is cable around the area but please be careful! Turn with the river and continue along the trail. There was a lot of mud here, you are heading for the wooden steps going down. They will be in front and to the right of you depending on the mud and your path around it! You want to go down these steps. They twist and turn on the way down and some of them are loose so just go slow. You will now notice another waterfall on your right, keep going down to the bottom. At the bottom go straight ahead and will see where the 2 rivers meet and some stone steps, go down and enjoy the falls!
Now for your prize! Go back up the stone steps to the wooden ones. Stop at the bottom of the wooden steps. Stand there and count up 9 steps.....just to the left you will find your prize under rock! Please rehide well, this area looks like it gets used by the locals for parties quite often!
Re-trace your steps to the beginning and you can look for Tannery Brook!
You can get back to Route 2 the way you came.
