The Lost Animals – by Froggie of the Limekiln Loons

Fern Park is a multi-use facility maintained by the town of Inlet in the Central Adirondack Region offering an enclosed pavilion with restrooms and a basketball court, an outdoor basketball court, baseball field, and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. In the winter Fern park offers an enclosed ice skating rink with warming room, a sledding hill and miles of cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails.

Fern Park is also MOST FAMOUS for the annual July 4th Ping Pong Ball Drop as featured in the "Adirondack Kids" books. Thousands of Pig Pong balls are dropped from Payne's Air Service Cessna 185 or 206 float planes in three age designated "flights". The balls are then redeemed by the kids for prizes provided by the local merchants.

This excursion will give you an overview of the facilities & take you out into the hiking / biking/ cross country ski trails. Bring your seasonally appropriate equipment with you & spend the day!

Fern Park is located within walking distance of the dowwntown, just off South Shore Road, at 26 Loomis Rd., Inlet, NY 13360. There is ample parking on site, too.

Fern Park is always open. Lights inside the pavilion stay on until 10:00 PM, and there is also a lighted trail that stays lit until 10:00 PM as well.

For your adventure, park in the lot near the trails sign to begin.

Box # 1 – Lost Piggie
Enter the trail at the #1 trail marker (follow the green trail). You will see several huge boulders to the left of the trail. Continue on the trail just past the boulders, and there’s a trail marker on the right. At the marker, turn right and look into the woods. You’ll see a large moss-covered rock. You’ll find the first lost animal behind the rock, covered with leaves and rocks.

Box #2 – Lost Penguin
Continue on the green trail, which goes up and around a corner to the right. After you’ve turned the corner, you’ll see a twisted two-trunked tree on the left side of the trail. Behind this tree, there’s a long dead fallen tree in the woods. The second lost animal is at the right end (the far end from the twisted tree) in front of and under the dead tree, covered by leaves and rocks.

Box #3 – Lost Kangaroo
Continue on the green trail, which takes a sharp turn to the left and goes slightly uphill. Take about 20 steps past the trail marker that’s on the corner (before the left turn). On the right of the trail in the woods a bit (10-15 steps), there are two trees that form a V with a dead log (tree) sticking through the V. Behind and under the dead log is the third lost animal, covered with leaves and rocks.

Thank you for finding these lost animals!
