March 30,1867-- Alaska purchased from Russia,by Sec.of
State William H. Seward...$7.2 million of 586,00 sq.miles
immediately called "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox"
by critics.
1943-1953--- Alaskan territorial govenor and others started
movement to become state.
Jan.1958-- bill introduced under the "privilaged status"
provision to admit Alaska to Union.passed by
roll call vote both branches of government
House of Rep.217- -172
Senate 64- -20
July 7,1958-- President Dwight D.Eisenhowser signed bill
admiting Alaska to the Union,efactive
Jan.3,1959
Jan.3,1959- --Alaska offically becomes the 49th state of
the Union
This "Transplanted Mainiac" can remember when Alska was admitted to the Union..I was 10.
History BRIEF---but I wanted to give SOME background...
The clues:
find the place dedicated to the signing of the bill admitting Alaska to the union.
Facing it,left hand side,metal trashcan,under cement....
Please be carefull as the city has JUST finished filling and reseeding this area.
Also,,PLEASE make sure that it is stuffed back and to right and that it cannot be seen when you step back, and/or are coming up the hill...
Please be careful as this is a very open,public and BUSY area.
