Mt. Tom Universal Access Series
Mt. Tom State Reservation, Holyoke

Enter the Reservation at the Lake Bray entrance off Route 5 in Holyoke. Bring your own stamp pad and pen. These boxes are fairly wheelchair accessible, but a letterboxing buddy is the best guarantee for obtaining all the boxes if you have any mobility challenges. The entire walk is about a quarter mile.

 Accessible Picnicking
North of the building with restrooms at Lake Bray, scan the scattered pine trees on a gentle slope for a tree with several old whitish shelf mushrooms near the base. Beyond this one is a good size pine with a large stump attached. Explore another stump cavity on the backside of this tree, still in view of the accessible picnic area by the lake. Please re-hide well.

 Red Tail MISSING as of Fall 2009
Take a walk on the accessible trail that starts from the large parking lot near a kiosk. When you come to the first stone bench on the right, look right at the fallen logs along the edge of the forest. Check the left end of one in the middle for a hollow hiding place. Please be discreet here as it is an often traveled area. This letterbox has the logbook for this series.

 Beaver Tree
Continue on the accessible trail where it branches off to the left and follows the edge of the lake. The trail has wooden boards along its edges and is made of stone dust. Round the point and pass the fishing platform. Cross a footbridge and head uphill. Notice all the signs of beaver activity on trees along the water. As you reach a high point and take a sharp right turn (continuing on the trail), notice a good sized hemlock tree next to the trail on the right. This one has a rock on the far side. Nestled between the rock and the tree trunk you’ll find the beaver busy at work. Please re-hide this one carefully too, since it is so close to the trail. Thanks!
