Sitting Pretty Susie
Collinsville IL - Woodland Park
very easy and kid friendly
Letterbox / Geocache combination
N 38° 41.35 W 089° 58.02 (WGS-84)
From the main entrance road to Woodland Park locate the "Lions" on the corner. A great place for the kids to play or to take in lunch under the pavilion.
After lunch follow the steps downhill. You'll want to stop along the way and watch the ducks from the bridge ... but no need to cross the lake, instead take in a show!
From there head east and locate one old brick water fountain. Continue further east until reach steps that seemingly head nowhere but up. Two trees make a grand archway. Pass through them and continue up hill. From the Larremore drinking fountain head SW to the resting woman. Sit down if you are tired. Now locate the near octagon within the circle. This is the old flag pole donated by the VFW Ladies Kahokian Memorial Post 5691. Stand and look around this once well used and often frequented knoll...imagine the ceremonies that took place here.
From the location of the old flag pole hole face the Women's Club bench then turn 90 degrees to the right. Line yourself up with a tall tree in the distance and take 15 strides in that direction.
You will find Susie sitting pretty among some mushrooms in a crevice. The tree located there is offering to give you a boost up so you can reach her better.
Once you've stamped up be sure to completely close all zip-locks and containers and hide Susie well...covering her up with bark and leaves and even cleaning the crevice out with a stick to be sure she fits back in.
