Terrain: Fairly easy, can be muddy, steep slope near the creek crossing
Clues: Fairly easy
The box is in the McKeldin area of Patapsco Valley State Park. Take exit 83 off I-70, head north on Marriotsvile Road for four miles, park is on the right. $2 per person entrance fee, $1.50 for a trail map, which I recommend.
CLUES:
She saw the old jack-in-the-box at the roadside flea market. The odd-looking proprietor told her it was good luck to open the box. She turned the crank, and out popped a clown doll, kind of scary-looking. But she did have good luck all week, so she returned the next weekend and bought it. Then things started going wrong. First the arguments, then the sickness, then the flood. Then other things.... Finally, she realized, it was good luck to open the box, not to own it. She decided to get rid of the box, to hide it out in the woods so no one would be subject to its curse. But word got out somehow, the story persisted until it passed into urban legend: there was a box in the woods that would bring you good luck if you opened it. You follow a blue trail down along a creek. You'll see a deer path heading 160* across the creek to a large boulder. Somewhere near the rock is the scary-clown-in-the-box. Open it, but don't take it with you, and hide it well when you leave.
Notes:
- No ink pad in the box, make sure you bring your own.
- Please do not ask me for additional hints without offering a bribe of unpublished clues, hitchhikers, etc.
- Please email me with notes about the box: jelybean.books@comcast.net.
