Freetown State Forest is a large tract of public land in a remarkably quiet corner of the state, with over 50 miles of unpaved roads and trails designated for multiple uses. The Watuppa Reservation, owned by the Wampanoag Nation is within the forest (although off-limits to the general public) and is still used for tribal gatherings. The park provides restrooms near the main entrance and dogs are welcome.

Find your way to Profile Rock area in Assonet, MA. Drive through the gates and park in the main parking lot. NOTE: The gates are closed at 4 pm daily but the park doesn’t close until dusk. Park outside the gates if arriving late in the day and walk to the main lot.

From main parking lot, take gravel path heading due north. The trail will curve to the left, presenting you with a view of Chief Massasoit’s profile (or Metacomet’s, depending on who you ask) at 270°. You must climb to the top so walk down the stone steps to the left, straight past the stump at the T intersection, crossing over a grassy area and two low stone walls. The trail curves right and up the backside of the hill. Some folks may find it easier to climb up the side with the profile.

From the top of Joshua’s Mountain, you must take the bearings of two man-made landmarks:
X = Looking out roughly in the same direction as the profile, a radio tower sits at ____°.
Y = A sole church steeple is visible from these heights at ____°.
(Note: If searching after the leaves have fallen and you see two steeples, it’s the one on the right.)

Once you’ve taken in the scenery, descend to the bottom again either by the way you came up or down the side of the profile. The warrior gazes upon a trail heading (Y + 45)°. Take this trail and stay left, ignoring some faint trails to the right. The trail descends shortly to a T intersection. Take the trail leading away from the yellow warning. Bear right onto the next trail and go 60 paces. Take the path at 215°, hopping over the log.

You’ll soon reach a T in a clearing. Go left and up. At a paved way, take evergreen path at 35°. Walk up this trail a while and pass through a (possibly) muddy section of trail. Bear right at the major fork that you soon arrive at. Pick your way through a group of fallen comrades. 15 paces more and you’ll be in the line of fire of the wooden cannon. Near the base of the cannon, behind marked tree at (X ÷ 2)°, you will find your prize in the remnants of a stone wall.

Go back the way you came to return to your car.
