The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is Michigan's largest state park. Each year on the last weekend of August, the Park hosts the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival -- a three day celebration of music where the pristine forest meets the grandeur of Lake Superior.
Located on Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula, the Park is a great place to visit any time of year; however, you may have trouble finding this letterbox in the winter due to the area's extremely high snowfall. (Great for skiing, bad for letterboxing!)
Begin your visit by stopping at the main Visitors' Center for a look at the map. From here you will take the Nature Trail into the forest. Stop to read the various signposts along the path featuring information about forest plants and wildlife.
The path will come to a paved road. Cross the road and pick up the trail about 50 feet to your left.
The Porkies are famous for featuring the largest uncut (virgin) stands of one particular kind of large coniferous tree with tiny green needles and shaggy gray-brown bark. This "old man of the forest" may live as long as 300-500 years. Find the sign post featuring information about this kind of tree.
Stand facing the sign, with a large specimen of this tree on your left. Step around the sign, and walk straight about 25 paces to another of the same kind of tree. The box you seek is hidden under a piece of bark at the base of the tree.
After stamping in, please replace the box as you found it. You may choose to go back the way you came, or continue around the loop of the Nature Trail--about 45 minutes easy walk.
Don't forget to check out the other treasures at the Porcupine Mountains, such as Lake of the Clouds and the spectacular waterfalls at Presque Isle. We hope you enjoy this unspoiled wilderness as much as we do!
