The “jewel of Sacramento” is the American River Parkway which runs 23 miles along the American River. There is a beautiful bike path plus opportunities for hiking, fishing, picnicking, and rafting. It is one of our favorite places to spend a morning. These letterboxes are on the American River Parkway via the Sacramento Bar entrance.
From U.S. Highway 50, take the Sunrise Blvd. off-ramp. Head north to Fair Oaks Blvd. Make a left on Fair Oaks, then an immediate left onto Pennsylvania Avenue. The kiosk is at the end of Pennsylvania Avenue, just past Magnolia Street. There is a $5.00 fee to enter the parkway even when there is nobody in the booth to collect it.
We have planted 3 letterboxes as part of our Sunrise on the River series. There is a healthy amount of poison oak in the area on the sides of the trails so beware of leaves of three!
The Happy Acorn PULLED FOR MAINTENANCE as of 2/15/2013
To get to the first box, go to the far end of the parking lot. If you brought your horse, you can tie it up as you will have to take the horse path on foot. Continue on the path past the white fence on your right. You will see a useless gate on your right. Keep going. When you come to the unhappy tree, go right to the path that goes under the tree. Walk under the tree, turn around, and look for the branch you just walked on. Turn right and take 7-8 steps along the branch. Look under it for the box.

To get to this box, head back to the parking lot. Stop at the “Keep Right” sign and head due south across the picnic area and take the path into the woods. Continue to the fork. Take the right fork, past the big oak on your left. Find the 8 branch tree on your left. You will find your prize on the river side. Don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful view of the river!
A Furry Friend - PULLED FOR MAINTENANCE as of 2/15/2013
This box is a little tougher to get to as it will involve some hiking. There are some small hills to climb up and go down. Nothing extreme. The hike is a loop and is about a mile long. To get to this box you need to start at the Sunrise on the River box. Continue on the same path (the right fork). When you get to the gravel road that parallels the river, continue in the downstream direction. At the next fork, turn right. Continue past the berry bushes on your left and through the fallen tree. Climb up the hill of rock. At the top, turn to the right. When you see the large rock pile to the left, take the path downhill towards it. At the bottom, take the path furthest to the right. Pretty soon, take another right. You are now entering a valley with rocky ridges on both sides. This is the valley of our Furry Little Friend. Continue on a ways on this nice level path. At the point where the valley narrows, you will come to where a tree at one point fell across the path. Now most of the tree is on your left. Not too long ago, there was a path under this tree. Not so convenient now, but there your treasure be. Go up the path to the upper part of the tree and look under some rocks for your furry friend.
Continue on the path back to the parking lot. After the little dip in the trail, take the path to the right towards the big bare hill of rock. Take the path to the left of the pile. You are now at the bike path. Take it to the right to get back to the parking lot.
