Approximate Time: 30 minutes round trip
Difficulty: Moderate, wet in the spring, not real well groomed in Charlton, watch for barbed wire along trail sides.
I chose to celebrate Panda Paw’s 16th birthday by planting a box in her honor because she’s always there when I need a letterboxing partner.
The Midstate Trail is a scenic footpath located in Worcester County. This 92 mile hiking trail extends from Rhode Island to the Wapack Trail in NH, a small portion running through the north/east corner of Charlton. For more information on the trail check out their website at www.midstatetrail.org
From the junction of Rt. 20 and Rt. 31 head east on Rt. 20 for 2.4 miles. Take a right onto Old Worcester Rd.. At .1 miles take a left onto Old Worcester Rd. Ext.. Follow to the end and park in the circle.
Walk back the way you came passing three sets of mailboxes to find the yellow triangles marking the trail. Follow the trail down the hill, continue under Rt. 20 through an old cow tunnel. Once out the other side look to your left for the next yellow triangle. Follow the trail into the trees walking parallel to Rt.20 on your left and with a stone wall to your right. Very shortly the trail goes through a break in the wall and continues in a westerly direction. Follow the trail & soon it will go to the right over an old log bridge. Continue to follow the yellow triangles over a fallen tree and then over a stream or dry stream bed (depending on the time of year). Keep going & you’ll head down hill, after start looking for a large three trunk uprooted tree. Standing with the tree on your left take a bearing of 330 degrees. Take about 15 steps in this direction, you should be in front of a large tree. Look behind the tree for Panda Paw’s birthday surprise.
Return the way you came or continue to explore the Midstate Trail.
Happy Letterboxing!
