Trail difficulty: easy
Clues: easy
Length: approximately 1 hour

*10-05-12 Box #1 has been relocated to a less traveled area of the ledges.
These boxes should be done in order because they create a picture of the beautiful ledges. The log book is in the last box.

Directions:
Rte 101 in Temple to Rte 45. Take your second left onto Howard Hill Road. Just a short way along the road takes a sharp turn right and straight ahead is an old carriage shed. We park here, making sure not to block the way. There is a map box on a tree on the left just past the shed, but there usually aren’t any maps. You won’t need one.
Walk straight past the shed out the old road with stone walls on both sides. You could drive this if you had a 4x4, but we enjoy the walk. (It can be wet and muddy depending on the season). Continue up to the green gate. Walk around the gate and continue on the trail through the pine/hemlock forest. At a clearing the trail bends around to the right and up to the white ledges. Climb to the top and admire the view. Rte 101 is in front of you and Pack Monadnock is over you left shoulder. Explore to the right, past a broken stonewall to another section of ledge. This side overlooks a birch and hardwood forest.

Box #1
Walk past the large cairn to a small pine tree. Standing at the small pine, there is another small pine ahead of you to the right. The first box is under a couple of rocks next to this tree. Please rehide carefully.

Box #2
Return to the first ledge area and start down the trail you came up. Back through the clearing and into the pine/hemlock forest. Watch the right side of the trail for two huge pines that share one base. (These trees are healthy and right next to the trail). At the trees, walk to the stone wall on your left and step through the wall onto a large stone. Turn around to face the huge trees. What you seek in the wall by yourleft foot behind a rock.
Box #3
Return to the trail and continue down the hill. At the bottom of the hill, just past the swampy spot on the right, is on old spooky tree on your left. The tree sits just over the stone wall and has many arms. At the base of the tree, under the arm closest to the green gate, the final prize is in the wall behind a rock.

My kids, dog and I love this little hike. We usually bring a picnic or snack to enjoy on the ledges.
