Kitty and I went on a very easy, very lovely hike today along the Old Salmon River trail, where we found a home for the Salmonberry box. If you enjoy ancient forests, mostly flat terrain, and plenty of of places to wade in the summer, this is the hike, and the box, for you.
To reach the trail, drive east from Portland on Highway 26 to Zig Zag. Watch for Salmon River Rd. on your right, before you reach the ranger station. Head down Salmon River Rd. for about 2.5 miles; just after a large "Mt. Hood National Forest" sign is a parkng area next to the trailhead. This is a "NW Forest Pass" parking area, and you can pick one up at the ranger station or the Thirftway in Zig Zag.
Head down the trail, through the unbelievably huge old-growth Doug Firs and cedars. Just before you reach the stairs, enter the salmonberry grove and look for the gnome cave. Hidden inside, behind some rocks and moss, is the box.
Please take care to rehide the box completely. This is a fairly heavily used trail (although it's so lush and gorgeous that it feels more private than it is).
