Uncle Henry, of Andover MA, is my great great uncle. His sister, Martha Foster Chandler, was my great great grandmother. She was married to Bela Jenks Stone, of Sturbridge, and they lived together there. She died of consumption in Andover, and was buried in Sturbridge.

My great great grandfather remarried and moved to Westborough. His oldest daughter, Marion Chandler Stone, married her high school sweetheart, Darius Augustine Newton, and had five children, the second to youngest being my grandfather, Francis Chandler Newton. He had the picture of Uncle Henry and his Medal of Honor plaque in his home, and after I started to research my genealogy, I wanted to find out where Uncle Henry was buried.

We visit his grave every Memorial day, but I wanted to plant a box there to honor him further. I mailed the finished box off to Choi who kindly volunteer to plant it for me.

CHANDLER, HENRY FLINT

Born: September 26, 1835 at Andover, MA
Entered Service in the US Army from Andover, MA, as an orderly sergeant.
Rank and Organization: Sergeant, Company E, 59th Massachusetts Infantry.
Date of Issue: 30 March 1898.
Earned The Medal of Honor During the Civil War For heroism June 17, 1864 at Petersburg, VA
Died: November 16, 1906 at the age of 71

Seventeen men earned Medals of Honor for their heroism at Petersburg, Virginia, in the battle that raged from June 15 - 18, 1864. On June 17 Sergeant Henry Chandler was one of thirteen heroes thus cited. In an bayonet charge early in the day, Sergeant Chandler was seriously wounded and ordered to go to the rear for treatment. Unwilling to leave his men to face the enemy fire alone, he disobeyed those orders and remained with his regiment and helped to carry the breastworks.

Clues:

Enter the cemetery at the intersection of Reservation Road, Shawsheen Road and Lowell Street. After going through the arch, take the left paved road to the bottom of the hill. Make a right turn then another right on the brick road and park by the office. Take the walkway to the northwest until you reach the marker for Joshua Chandler on the left. (Joshua Chandler is Henry's father). Just after his marker turn left and walk down to visit Henry Flint Chandler. Walk around the graves to the obelisk for Shattuck at 210 deg. Turn to 240 degrees and walk 20 steps. Uncle Henry is at the base of the tree on your left under a thin rock.
