Pride Of Pittsburgh LbNA #20517
Owner: | N/A |
---|---|
Plant date: | Feb 20, 2006 |
Location: | |
City: | Pittsburgh |
County: | Allegheny |
State: | Pennsylvania |
Boxes: | 5 |
Directions to Frick Park: Located on the east side of the city at exit 7 off of I-376. Go north on Braddock to Forbes and the park is on your left.
Difficulty: Boxes are easy to find (in my opinion) but the terrain is pretty hilly with about a 100' elevation change for the first two(if wet, use your better judgement) and flat for the last three. Paths are pretty smooth and bridges are well made for the last three but is a mountain bike trail for the first two. Total distance for all 5 is about 1.5 mile max. and much shorter for the short version. There are lots of bikers and folks walking/running dogs, so please be discrete when retrieving or replacing pouches.
Please bring your stamp, a stamp pad, pen and an old rag to wipe off the box/your hands. Bug repellant might come in handy during the summer months. A compass is not needed for these 5 since it was so cold when placed that I preferred not to use it.
This series of letter pouches depicts various themes around Pittsburgh in which folks take pride. The subjects are located in various parts of town and due to my time constraints (just visiting from out of town), the cold and snow, and the fact that the areas in which the subjects are located do not lend themselves to placements, leads me to put all the pouches as a series in one park. Also, you will notice that the enclosure pouch for the letterbox is not water proof so please make sure the baggies are resealed well to protect the logbooks from moisture.
PRIDE ON THE DIAMOND. (Note 1: for a much shorter walk see instructions after Pride on the Mountain Side) (Note 2: If you are out of shape or have breathing problems the climb on these first two boxes will be a test for you.)
From the intersection of Forbes and Braddock go south a little ways and just past the tennis courts pull into the parking lot. Go to the Braddock Trail and walk left down the gradual slope until reaching the blacktop road (about 1/4 mile). Go down the road to the next to last parking area on the right before the circular drive. Turn to face the right in the last 1/2 of this lot and look up the hill. There was a wooden picnic table there when I was and behind the table is a path that goes to the right up the fairly steep hill. Take this path up, with fallen dead logs on the right side. Just before reaching the large tree, with many exposed roots, veer left and follow the path along the side of the fallen log on the left. Above this log is a fork in the path.... bear left and 37 steps past the fork is a large hard wood tree just left of the path. (I am 6' 3" so adjust my count to fit your step) Go 9 steps further and look left for a large tree 11 steps off the path with a long slit running from ground to about 12' up. Your letterpouch quest is located on a ledge in the slit about 6' above ground. Please reseal well and replace as found.NOTE: A RECENT FINDER RELOCATED THIS BOX DUE TO A BEE HIVE. The first box has been temporarily relocated to the bottom of the tree because of a bees nest in the tree. Quite a few bees, so if folks are not careful, they'll be stung. Thanks
Kathleen
Thank you Kathleen......there were no bees in the winter when I planted it. Safari Man ANOTHER NOTE RECEIVED 9/10/06: Just wanted to let you know that the tree that held the pouch in its slit has fallen and the pouch is in the base of the fallen tree. Thank you DARKSTAR for the update.....Safari Man
PRIDE ON THE MOUNTAIN SIDE. Go back to the path and continue as you were going for another 55 steps to a semi crest in the hill and the path bends harder to the left. From here go another 55 steps to a fork in the path and go right. Shortly you will come to a place in the path with dead trees lying on both sides with one on your right sticking out at you very close at about shoulder height. Follow the sticking out branch down to the fork then follow the other branch out to the curled up hump. Behind the hump is a hole and in the hole is the letterpouch you seek. (NOTE: FINDER (PINK CAT) ON 10/6/08 FOUND THE BOX ON THE GROUND BEHIND THE TREE SO LEFT IT THERE, UNDER BARK, SINCE IT APPEARED A CRITTER HAD TAKEN OVER THE HOLE) Now go back to your car. (short version: From Forbes, drive south on Braddock to the traffic light at Hutchinson (1/2 mile) and turn right/west and go 4 blocks to Lancaster and turn right. Drive down the Fricks Park road to the next to last parking area before the circular drive and park.)
PRIDE OF SCIENCE AND LEARNING. Drive or walk north on Braddock past Forbes 3 streets (1/10 mile) and turn left on Kensington. Before reaching the end of block (entrance to Frick Park) park on left side of street and walk to entrance. ( Note: Lots of folks riding, walking and playing around here so please make sure the coast is clear before getting and replacing pouches.) At entrance go left and follow the Kensington Trail until reaching the stone steps on the right. 12 steps past the stone steps stop and look left at a large tree with another large tree behind it. Your letterpouch quest is behind the second tree under a rock and limbs. Please double bag the log and reseal baggies well when done.
PRIDE OF ANIMAL OBSERVATION AND CONSERVATION.
Go back to the trail and go 25 steps further to a path crossing and take the smaller path to the right (over the hump) 55 steps and look right at the pair of downed tree roots looking at you. Go to the second tree and look under the roots, under dead limbs for the letterpouch.
PRIDE ON THE GRIDIRON. Go back to the path and continue forward 55 steps stopping short of the large upright tree just off the path to the right. Look to your right for a dead lying tree . Your letterpouch quest is in the large end of this lying tree. Recover it well after the stamping and resealing is done please. This completes the series and I hope you enjoyed the hunt, find, logs and stamps. If you bear right ahead there is a larger trail (Hawthorn) that will take you back to your car.
I apologize that this last part of the series is so short but I am once again freezing my rear end off at this point and ready to get back to the car and warm up. I think Frick park is beautiful and if you want more hiking, there is plenty of it here, along with mountain bike riding. Please let me know the condition of the pouches and anything else you would like to tell me by using the contact the placer function at the top of this set of clues. I will do my best to reply to your e mail. Thank you very much in advance. Safari Man of Vincent, Ohio.
P.S. Be sure to check Mr. Yuk's clues as he has added a 6th box to this series and it is planted in this same area.
If anyone else would like to join this series, I encourage you to do so.
