STATUS 9-27-07: THIS BOX HAS BEEN RETIRED.
STATUS 1-10-07 - CURRENTLY MISSING STAMP. First stolen stamp was replaced 8-5-06 but second stamp is now stolen too per park ranger report to me 1-10-07.
Difficulty: Embarrassingly Easy
Time: Drive time 5-10 min, walk time 5-10 min
To get a different viewpoint of Seward and Resurrection Bay, take Lowell Point Rd. from downtown Seward just beyond the Alaska Sea Life Center. This is the same road that leads to Miller's Landing. The gravel road winds along the water's edge with lots of great little spots to wet a fishing line or just enjoy views of the bay. Just before Miller's Landing, take a right turn on Martin's Rd (if you see the Chicken Penny-Tentiary, you have just missed the turn).
Along Martin's Rd., you'll soon see (but you won't take) a turnoff to the right with a state recreation area sign for Lowell Point. This climbs a hill to the upper parking lot and trail access. But pass this one by and continue just a little further to the lower parking area instead, also on your right.
The small parking area for the lower trailhead has a restroom and a fee station. Stay longer than 30 minutes and you owe the state five bucks for being a slow boxer. No worries as this is a very fast find.
Proceed on the footpath beyond the parking area, toward the beach. When you get to the beach, turn right and follow the beach to the sign that says No Access Beyond This Point - Private Property. Facing the sign, look directly right where you'll see large spruce trees growing up from a nearly vertical bluff face. Bearing about 290d about 10-12 paces (blah blah - just go to the bluff), you'll see the roots of a particularly immense tree. The letterbox is under the right root clump, concealed by pieces of shale. The stamp is a Haida portrayal of one of the bay's largest residents who sees everything in black and white.
