This box is in honor of Hoosier Honey Bee and her great suggestion for a quick coffee or lunch break. River Promenade is White River State Park's hidden treasure. Behind the Indianapolis Zoo on the west bank of the White River is a half-mile long paved walkway lined with 1,272 massive blocks of Indiana limestone. Beautiful landscaping, flowering trees and evergreens and renderings of famous landmarks carved into the rock along the way. It offers great views of the water as well as the city skyline.
You can park at the zoo and walk around back between the zoo and the White River Garden to reach your destination. However, there is a $5.00 parking fee during zoo hours. I reached the Promenade from downtown Indianapolis on foot by taking the Central Canal Walkway from Ohio Street, past the Indiana State Museum and over the Washington Street Bridge.
Clues: Once you have crossed over the Washington Street Bridge you will find yourself standing almost face to face with a Giant Metal American Bison. From the Bison turn to your right (NW) and this will lead you into the River Promenade.
Follow the River Promenade until you come to the words carved into the limestone on your right that read, “Indiana Limestone enables easy excavation of varied architectural styles and sculptural expressions.” Standing in front of these words facing the limestone wall on the opposite side at 230 degrees there is a small crack between two giant stones in the top row of rocks. In this crack hidden behind some smaller stones you will find “Coffee Break” hiding.
Enjoy your visit to the River Promenade. Should you note the box missing, it’s contents in bad repair or if you just want to say “Hi” please contact me at Blackvelvetrav@yahoo.com. Please note that I am from Idaho so if the box requires first aid or relocation assistance it might take some local intervention to assist. Thank you & happy hunting!
