There's so much to explore in the Marin Headlands that I couldn't resist adding a box of my own.
Start from the Hawk Hill box and then proceed on to this one. When you get back to your car, head for the one-way road you were told to avoid. Follow this and enjoy the view until a stop sign comes in to view. Then proceed toward Pt. Bonita on another one-way road. Pass on by Battery Wallace and the picnic area and pull into the dirt parking area on the left. Here is another view to enjoy, assuming the fog doesn't block it off.
Now tear yourself away and head down the narrow path toward the bridge. After awhile you will come upon a rather scruffy looking bush (tree??) on the left that's more bare branches than leaves. (It's August. Not sure what it will look like in January!) Now the path will head gently down and you will then come upon some bushes on the left and then a right turn. From here you'll also be able to spy the rocky shore below and, if you're lucky, some frolicking otters.
This box has been officially retired by the NPS. Turns out it's illegal to plant boxes in National Parks.
From the right turn, head back the way you came about 7 steps. What you're looking for is in the bushes on your right. Happy stamping.
I recommend long pants for this one.
Directions: From Highway 101 North, take the Sausalito exit just over the Golden Gate Bridge. From Southbound, take the Sausalito exit just before the bridge. Follow the signs for the Marin Headlands and the proceed to the top of the hill.
To exit, proceed on the one-way street till the first stop sign, then go right. Follow the sign for San Francisco and then veer right on McCullough. Turn left at the stop sign and then head back down to the highway.
However, before you leave you might want to do some more exploring. There's lots to see and lots of trails. Stop at the Visitor Center for a map and enjoy your stay.
Reported MIA on 9/11. Let me know if you find it.
