Location: This stamp is located on Great Misery Island, one of the most beautiful places on the North Shore of Boston. The island is off the coast of Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea but is technically part of the city of Salem. The island is owned and maintained by the Trustees of Reservation. There are bathrooms and many wonderful places to spend the day swimming, reading and picnicking.
Misery Islands website: http://www.thetrustees.org/pages/323_misery_islands.cfm
Daily admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children and is free for Trustees of Reservation members. There are normally Trustees stationed at South Beach and North Cove. Both areas have kiosks with information and maps.

Getting There: The island is accessible only by boat. For those with kayaks the closest public boat ramp is in downtown Manchester-by-the-Sea. For those without boats there are seasonal ferries that leave from Salem Willows. For schedules, fees, and reservations call (978) 741-1900

Distance: The walk takes you most of the way around the island. Leave yourself at least 45 minutes as there are many scenic vistas along the way.

Terrain: Once out on the island the walking is easy, mostly grassy with some rocks.

A compass will be needed to find the box.

Stamp: Hand-Drawn and Hand-Carved

The hike begins at the map kiosk on South Beach, where maps of the island are available.

Stand at the kiosk and get ready to go,
The path at 170° is the one you should follow.
As you begin your walk take in the gorgeous view,
Walk to a point where Bakers Island and it’s Lighthouse lie in front of you.
Your path will turn, now heading 30 degrees,
Continue along the path up and over the second highest point on the island if you please.
Pass a marker placed by the National Geodetic Society,
In a little while the path ends and you must turn towards the bearing of 360°.
At the south side of a rocky beach your path will come to an end,
Manchester Harbor and Light are visible as you come around the bend.
Look across the beach with a heading of 3-4-0,
There you can see the path on which you should go.
The path will open up as North Cove comes into sight,
Locals call it Cocktail Cove, since sunset cruises here are a delight.
At the top of the hill follow the line of rocks that seem out of place,
Down to the pond you go, keep up your pace.
Go to the middle of the round ruin and by the old pipe stand for a break,
To the man-made structure at 290° your way you should make.
Read about the history of the island then take 15 paces at a setting of 260
From there take the northern path until you reach a T.
At this intersection follow the larger stonewall and head up the hill,
Go down some stairs, go left, and up more stairs still.
Enjoy the view from where the luxury resort once stood,
It would be wonderful to go back in time if we could.
To find your next path stand behind the number four,
See the path ahead of you, that is the way of your island tour.
Follow this path down a hill and thru a stone-wall,
You will come to the place where a water tower once stood tall.
There are twelve columns but one has a distinguishing mark,
Find a teeny, tiny round hole, not even big enough for a lark.
Stand with your back to the hole and get out your compass once again,
At 320° will be your path, wide from the travels of other men.
Walk down the hill towards the multi-trunked tree,
It is a great napping and reading place as you can see.
250° degrees from the tree is the heading of the path you follow next,
Head over the hill, spy the Bleak House ruin and head there to end your quest.
When you reach the ruin, turn right, head to the old door, as far as the path will allow,
Enjoy the view, the waves crashing, the boats going by….wow!
Head back into the house and spot a rusty pipe amid the rubble,
Take four steps east from the pipe to find your prize without trouble.

To get back to South Beach:
After leaving the ruin, take the first turn heading south along the coast of the island. Go right at the fork. The path crosses a small rocky beach. Eventually you will end up right back where the hike started.
