Jan. 2007 update: well, I guess another one bites the dust. I sure couldn't find it.
Hangtown's Gold Bug Park is a great spot for a picnic and to learn some California history. You can explore a mine, pan for gold, visit the stamp mill, or just beeline to the box and blow off the rest of it! Hours are 8-5 daily; there is no entrance fee, but some of the activities require a small price of admission.
The Night Thieves are too lazy to work their own claims and prefer nocturnal activity. They have just quietly raided the camps where more diligent souls have been working their sluice boxes, gold pans and hard rock mines. They made a good little haul and are now sneaking off, trying to make their escape up the canyon. You've been deputized, and can still catch them!
--Spring St. to Pleasant St. then left on Bedford Ave.
--Take the main road by foot or car to the cul-de-sac/bus parking.
--From the last "Park Gate Closes at 5 pm" sign, notice stop sign at 250.
--Walk to it, then carefully search between the large pine tree and his little oak brother on your left.
Please return box to its nesting place in leaf litter & under bark.
Note to Don: I don't know if you can turn your rig around up there. Buses can do it, and you probably can, too, as long as it's not a very crowded day.
Good luck!
